The will_paginate gem is broken on my version of Oracle. The default `paginate_by_sql` method in the WillPaginate module is inserting an extra &#39;AS&#39; into a query and causing it to fail.

The code itself is easily fixed, but I&#39;m not sure of the best way to get Rails to pick up my change.

I don&#39;t want to change the code in the gem itself, as that will leave my code broken on other machines.

I tried creating an lib/test.rb file containing:

    module WillPaginate
      def paginate_by_sql
        (my code goes here)
      end
    end

and requiring it from environment.rb, but it&#39;s not picking up my changes.
I also tried requiring it from controllers/application.rb, but again, not picking up my changes.

Temporarily, I got it to work by overriding the method within the specific model itself, but this is a bit of a hack, and means I can&#39;t use it on any of the other models in this project.

I&#39;m sure there&#39;s an easy way to do this, but I&#39;m not having any luck tracking it down using Google.

Overriding a module method from a gem in Rails

I have a set of rails view helpers that I use regularly, and would like to package them up into a gem, such that I could just put a line in my Gemfile, and have the helpers accessible from my views.

   I have created gems before using Bundler, and Jeweler, however, I&#39;m not all all clear on how to organize the Rails view helpers in a gem, and include them into rails.

   I would appreciate any pointers, or links to up-to-date tutorials on how to do this for Rails 3

When using node package manager you can specify `npm install --save mynodemodule` which automatically pops the module in `package.json`

I recently upgrade to the 10.10 Yosemite beta, but I&#39;m having trouble getting Nokogiri installed. I&#39;m using RVM and Ruby 1.9.3. I&#39;ve also followed the steps [here](https://gist.github.com/vparihar01/5856524) and tried following the instructions on Nokogiri&#39;s homepage.

**EDIT 6/10/14:** After trying for a couple days to get Nokogiri installed on OSX 10.10, I ended up abandoning the task and restored 10.9 on my machine. Several libraries and bundles need to be updated in order to work in the 10.10 environment.

I&#39;m attempting to follow the Hartl Rails Tutorial, and having trouble with the bundler gem.

When using the commands &#39;bundle install&#39; or &#39;bundle update&#39; I get the following output:

**The solution for me was two parts:** I changed https to http, and that temporarily solved the issue. The second issue was that I think I had a bad install of ruby 2.0.0 even though I was using a fresh install of ruby 1.9.3. So I reinstalled ruby 2.0.0, and I could use bundle install with https.

Bundle Install could not fetch specs from https://rubygems.org/

I am getting the following error when doing `bundle install`

    Make sure that `gem install couchbase -v &#39;1.3.3&#39;` succeeds before bundling.

Now, i have not included this gem in the `Gemfile`, so it&#39;s coming from some dependency. How can i figure out which gem is dependent on this couchbase gem?

Since `bundle install` is failing and I don&#39;t have `Gemfile.lock` to figure out this dependency.


How to see the dependency tree just from Gemfile?

Specifically, the ruby-oci8 gem.  I have both 1.0.7 and 2.0.4 installed.  I want 1.0.7.

I can just require oci8, but I don&#39;t get the version I want.

How do I require a specific version of a ruby gem?

I&#39;m doing an engine here, it works alright in stand alone.

When I transform it into a gem, and load it inside another application, I get a lot of undefined errors, coming from my engine gem&#39;s dependecies.

Here is the gemspec:

    s.add_dependency(&#39;rails3-jquery-autocomplete&#39;)

In the application, when I do a bundle install, it lists all these dependencies, but as i run the application I receive a lot of undefined methods errors (has_attachment from paperclip for example). It seems that the application doesn&#39;t load the engines dependencies.
Is this the default behavior? Can I change it?
Same thing happened with a plugin inside the engine.

If I insert by hand those gems, in the application Gemfile, all works...

Unable to install gem - Failed to build gem native extension - cannot load such file -- mkmf (LoadError)

I&#39;m using [rails_admin](https://github.com/sferik/rails_admin), and since it is in (very) active development, bugs turn up every now and then.

There are no versions for the gem as far as I can tell, for the gem in github, so I can&#39;t use the `:version` key for the gem declaration in the Gemfile .

Is there a way I can &quot;tie&quot; a specific commit(that I know is working fine for me) to the Gemfile ?

I currently have in my Gemfile:

How to get a specific &quot;commit&quot; of a gem from github?

I&#39;m certainly no Ruby developer but I have an application on my server using Ruby, Gems, and Bundler. I am trying to install another Ruby on under a different user account but on the same VPS. When I go to run 

    bundle install

I get the following error:

I could remove the contents of the ./bundle directory so that all Gems are re-fetched to clear the error but will this have an impact on my other application using the same Gems and Bundler? I don&#39;t want to risk taking the other app down.

How do I list all versions of a gem available at a remote site?

When using `gem install gem_name` I can pass `--no-rdoc` and `--no-ri` switches to skip generating RDoc/RI documentation for the gem on install.

Is there a similar way to do this with `bundle install`?

I installed zlib package and ruby 1.9.3 using rvm, but whenever I try to install
gems it says
`cannot load such file -- zlib`

The commands I used to install are


    $ rvm install 1.9.3

All the help on this subject tells me to just do `rvm pkg install zlib`, and

I am new to Ruby and trying to wrap my head around following concepts: bundler vs RVM vs gems vs RubyGems vs gemsets vs system rub and I&#39;m confused.

Can someone please describe a &#39;best practice&#39; of how I should manage all this on a fresh install of the latest version of Ubuntu? What should I install, and how should I use it all? 

I&#39;m guessing that doing a `sudo apt-get install ruby` is not be recommended, but I am not sure. I tried it on my system in addition to &#39;all the other Ruby stuff&#39;. It&#39;s just adding to my confusion. I am not talking about Rails but just regular Ruby gems (e.g. Vagrant, Chef, scripts).

I execute this command in order to change the permission of the folder:

I know that when using `gem install`, the gem will be stored under /home/username/.rvm/gems/, under which gemset the gem was installed.

But if I use Bundler and specify the gem in the Gemfile, when I run bundle install, where will those gems be stored? And what if I already installed the gem using `gem install`, if I run bundle install, will it use the previous gem installed using `gem install`?

How to downgrade bundler or upgrade rails?

I&#39;ve tried [this][1] but it didn&#39;t work and seemed to be for osx. I have a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 install with rvm, rails 3 and ruby 1.9.2. I have a fresh rails app but using either gem or rails results in the following warnings (with lag).

Getting the warning &quot;Insecure world writable dir /home/chance &quot; in PATH, mode 040777 for rails and gem

I get the following error when attempting to run ```cap production deploy```.

It may be important to note that this deployment was working, than I upgraded to Ruby 2.1.0 to remove an encoding error.  I upgraded locally which worked fine. I ran ```rvm install 2.1.0``` and ```rvm use 2.1.0``` then changed my ```.ruby-version``` file to reflect this Ruby upgrade.

The ```bundle install``` command works locally, but produces the same above error when I ssh onto the destination server and run this command.    

If I run ```gem list``` I can see this in the list of gems.

If I try the recommended solution ```gem install json -v &#39;1.8.1&#39;``` Locally and on the destination server I get the following output:

How do I find out which gem has a specific dependency?

I&#39;m going through a tutorial that has suggested using `rspec`, but I have already gone through a lot of default rails installation.  I really don&#39;t want to have to redo the installation at all.  Anyway, when I run

When I run `bundle`, various `rspec` gems are listed, but `test_unit` is not.  The tutorial seems to have rails invoke `rspec` instead of `test_unit` without doing anything additional. How do I get rails to use `rspec` with the integration test generator command?

So I installed rugged -&gt; I installed CMake &amp; config-pkg :

An error occurred while installing rugged

Whenever I do `bundle install` all of the gems get installed at

    app_dir/vendor/bundle

path and consumes loads of disk space. I also tried installing gems where it should get installed i.e gemsets while development by this:

    bundle install --no-deployement

but this isn&#39;t working for me and installeing gems at `vendor/bundle`. How can I make it to be installed globally for all applications or in ruby gemsets location ? I also tried removing `.bundle/config` but nothing changed. 

I am using:

    rvm version: 1.23.14
    ruby version: 2.0.0-p247
    rails 3.2.13

I&#39;m try to install the SQLite gem on a Fedora 9 Linux box with Ruby 1.8.6, Rails 2.2.2, gem 1.3, and sqlite-3.5.9. Here&#39;s the command I&#39;m running and its results:

    sudo gem install sqlite3-ruby

`gem_make.out` just repeats what was already sent to the console. How can I install this gem?


Why can&#39;t I install the SQLite gem?

As per comments and this [post][1], I ran following:

`rvm implode` and then re installed the stable version.

ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError)

I&#39;ve found myself twice in this situation: I install a gem on my system and start using it from my Rails project. Eventually I need to make some changes to that gem. How should I proceed?

Ideally I&#39;d like to check out the source code of that gem somewhere, like ~/third_party/gems, work on it and have my Rails project use that instead. Is that possible?

In all the cases the gems were at github so I would probably for it at github, clone it, make my chances and maintain my own branch. I suppose then I would install that branch directly with gem install on my server. Does that make sense?

I am trying to install curb 0.8.0 on a Windows computer but I can not seem to get anywhere. I have been trying every website 3 pages deep on my Google search. Please, anyone have an idea of how I can get this single thing installed. I have downloaded curl and extracted it to C:\curl.  I have added it to my path and am running the command: 

    gem install curb -- --with-curl-lib=C:\curl\bin --with-curl-include=C:\curl\include

But it doesn&#39;t work. I keep getting the same error. Any suggestions?
