I&#39;m under the same impression as [this answer](https://stackoverflow.com/a/9387041/584518), that `size_t` is always guaranteed by the standard to be large enough to hold the largest possible type of a given system.

However, this code fails to compile on gcc/Mingw:

    #include &lt;stdint.h&gt;
    #include &lt;stddef.h&gt;
    
    typedef uint8_t array_t [SIZE_MAX];

&gt; error: size of array &#39;array_t&#39; is too large

Am I misunderstanding something in the standard here? Is `size_t` allowed to be too large for a given implementation?  Or is this another bug in Mingw?

    typedef uint8_t array_t [SIZE_MAX/2];   // does compile
    typedef uint8_t array_t [SIZE_MAX/2+1]; // does not compile

Which happens to be the same as

    #include &lt;limits.h&gt;

So I&#39;m now inclined to believe that this is a bug in Mingw, because setting the maximum allowed size based on a signed integer type doesn&#39;t make any sense.

I&#39;m an avid Python user and it seems that I require MinGW to be installed on my Windows machine to compile some libraries. I&#39;m a little confused about MinGW and GCC. Here&#39;s my question (from a real dummy point of view):

So Python is language which both interpreted and compiled. There are Linux and Windows implementations of Python which one simply installs and used the binary to a execute his code. They come bundled with a bunch of built-in libraries that you can use. It&#39;s the same with Ruby from what I&#39;ve read.

Now, I&#39;ve done a tiny bit a of C and I know that one has a to compile it. It has its built-in libraries which seem to be called header files which you can use. Now, back in the school day&#39;s, C, was writing code in a vi-like IDE called Turbo-C and then hitting F9 to compile it. That&#39;s pretty much where my C education ends.

What is MinGW and what is GCC? I&#39;ve been mainly working on Windows systems and have even recently begun using Cygwin. Aren&#39;t they the same?

A simple explanation hitting these areas would be helpful.

(My apologies if this post sounds silly/stupid. I thought I&#39;d ask here. Ignoring these core bits never made anyone a better programmer.)

I am using MinGW compiler on Windows to compile my C++ application with sockets. My command for linking looks like:

Recent NTFS and Windows implement symlinks:

What is the difference between MinGW, MinGW-w64 and MinGW-builds?

I am getting this error whenever I try to run GCC outside of its installation directory (`E:\MinGW\bin`). 

So, let&#39;s say I am in `E:\code` and have a file called `one.c`. Running:
`gcc one.c -o one.exe` will give me this error:

    gcc: CreateProcess: No such file or directory

The only workaround is to navigate to its installation directory, run gcc from there, and specify all the other paths. My environmental variable `Path` contains `E:\MinGW\bin`.

Any suggestions to fixing this problem? I am running Windows XP SP3.

I am trying to embed binary blobs into an exe file. I am using mingw gcc.

I make the object file like this:

    ld -r -b binary -o binary.o input.txt

I then look objdump output to get the symbols:

    objdump -x binary.o

And it gives symbols named:

    _binary_input_txt_start
    _binary_input_txt_end
    _binary_input_txt_size

I then try and access them in my C program:

Embedding binary blobs using gcc mingw

I have this library called [BASS][1] which is an audio library which I&#39;m going to use to record with the microphone. I have all the files needed to use it, but I don&#39;t know how to install the library. I tried taking the example files and putting them in the same directory as the bass.h file. But I got a bunch of errors saying there are function calls that doesn&#39;t exist. 

So my question is, how do I install it to be able to use it?

How do I install a c++ library so I can use it?

I am making a small vocabulary remembering program where words would would be flashed at me randomly for meanings. I want to use standard C++ library as Bjarne Stroustroup tells us, but I have encountered a seemingly strange problem right out of the gate. 

I want to change a `long` integer into `std::string` so as to be able to store it in a file. I have employed `to_string()` for the same. The problem is, when I compile it with g++ (version 4.7.0 as mentioned in its --‍version flag), it says:

    PS C:\Users\Anurag\SkyDrive\College\Programs&gt; g++ -std=c++0x ttd.cpp
    ttd.cpp: In function &#39;int main()&#39;:

But, I know it can&#39;t be because msdn library [clearly says][1] it exists and [an earlier question][2] on Stack Overflow (for g++ version 4.5) says that it can be turned on with the `-std=c++0x` flag. What am I doing wrong?

to_string is not a member of std, says g++ (mingw)

I have created a simple program in C++ with Code::Blocks.

If I run it from Code::Blocks, it works correctly; but if I run it by doubleclicking on the executable file, a window pops up with this message:

So, what is the problem? What do I have to do to fix it?

I&#39;m installing mingw-w64 on Windows and there are two options: win32 threads and posix threads. I know what is the difference between win32 threads and pthreads but I don&#39;t understand what is the difference between these two options. I doubt that if I will choose posix threads it will prevent me from calling WinAPI functions like CreateThread.

It seems that this option specify which threading API will be used by some program or library, but by what? By GCC, libstdc++ or by something else?

I can&#39;t find enough information to decide which compiler should I use to compile my project. There are several programs on different computers simulating a process. On Linux, I&#39;m using GCC. Everything is great. I can optimize code, it compiles fast and uses not-so-much memory. 

I do my own benchmark with MSVC and GCC compilers. Later one produces slightly faster binaries (for each subarchitecture). Though compile time is much more than MSVC. 

So I decided to use MinGW. But can&#39;t find any explanation about exception handling methods and their implementations in MinGW. I can use different distributions for different operating systems and architectures. 

Considerations: 

* Compile time and memory are not important for my usage. Only important thing is runtime optimization. I need my programs to be fast enough. A slow compiler is acceptable. 
* OS: Microsoft Windows XP / 7 / 8 / Linux
* Architecture: Intel Core i7 / Core2 / and a very old i686 running XP :P

I am a beginner to CMAKE. Below is a simple cmake file which works well in mingw environment windows. The problem is clearly with `target_link_libraries()` function of CMAKE where I am linking libwsock32.a. In windows this works and I get the results. 

However, as expected, in Linux, the `/usr/bin/ld` will look for `-lwsock32` which is NOT there on the Linux OS. 

My Problem is: How do I instruct CMAKE to avoid linking wsock32 library in Linux OS???

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

OS specific instructions in CMAKE: How to?

I&#39;m trying to compile a python extension with cython in win 7 64-bit using mingw (64-bit).  
I&#39;m working with Python 2.6 (Active Python 2.6.6) and with the adequate distutils.cfg file (setting mingw as the compiler)


When executing

    &gt; C:\Python26\programas\Cython&gt;python setup.py build_ext --inplace

I get an error saying that gcc has not an -mno-cygwin option:

I just installed MinGW on Windows and I&#39;m unable to copy/paste as I am used to on Linux or even PuTTY. What is the trick for copying and pasting text (e.g. from chrome) into MinGW shell?

I am trying to build some open source library. I need package management system to easily download the dependencies. At first I am using `MinGW+MSYS`. But the included packages are limited. Someone told me to use `MinGW-w64 + MSYS2`.

My current understanding is, in the time of `MinGW+MSYS`, MSYS is just a nice addon to MinGW, while in `MinGW-w64 + MSYS2`, MSYS2 is standalone and MinGW-w64 is just a set of libraries it can work with. Just like Cygwin can download many different packges.

How to redirect qDebug, qWarning, qCritical etc output?

On Windows, I&#39;m cross-compiling a program for ARM/Linux using CodeSourcery&#39;s cross-compiler suite. I use MinGW MSYS as my command interpreter, and very often it will mangle my paths and pathnames. For example, to build my program, I invoke

    arm-none-linux-gnueabi-gcc.exe -Wall -g \
        -Wl,--dynamic-linker=/usr/lib/myrpath/ld-linux.so.3 \
        -Wl,-rpath=/usr/lib/myrpath \
        -I../targetsysroot/usr/include \
        myprogram.c -o myprogram

Of course, I want `/usr/lib/myrpath` inserted verbatim into the `myprogram` executable - the ARM Linux target I&#39;m compiling for doesn&#39;t use MinGW or MSYS. But here&#39;s what ends up going into it:

    ...
    0x0000000f (RPATH)            Library rpath: [C:/MinGW/msys/1.0/lib/myrpath]
    ...

Not exactly what I wanted. If I invoke GCC on the cmd.exe command line directly, I get the right rpath in the executable. If I invoke GCC on the MSYS command line, I get the mangled rpath. If I invoke GCC with a Makefile that is run with make from the cmd.exe command line, I still get a mangled rpath (!)

Any ideas how I might turn off this annoying behavior?


How to stop MinGW and MSYS from mangling path names given at the command line

I want to cross compile the Qt libraries (and eventually my application) for a Windows x86_64 target using a Linux x86_64 host machine. I feel like I am close, but I may have a fundamental misunderstanding of some parts of this process.

I began by installing all the mingw packages on my Fedora machine and then modifying the `win32-g++` qmake.conf file to fit my environment. However, I seem to be getting stuck with some seemingly obvious configure options for Qt: `-platform` and `-xplatform`. Qt documentation says that `-platform` should be the host machine architecture (where you are compiling) and `-xplatform` should be the target platform for which you wish to deploy. In my case, I set `-platform linux-g++-64` and `-xplatform linux-win32-g++` where linux-win32-g++ is my modified win32-g++ configuration.

My problem is that, after executing configure with these options, I see that it invokes my system&#39;s compiler instead of the cross compiler (x86_64-w64-mingw32-gcc). If I omit the `-xplatform` option and set `-platform` to my target spec (linux-win32-g++), it invokes the cross compiler but then errors when it finds some Unix related functions aren&#39;t defined.

Questions:

 1. When cross-compiling something like Qt for Windows from a Linux host, should the native compiler *ever* be invoked? That is, during a cross compilation process, shouldn&#39;t we use *only* the cross compiler? I don&#39;t see why Qt&#39;s configure script tries to invoke my system&#39;s native compiler when I specify the `-xplatform` option.

 2. If I&#39;m using a mingw cross-compiler, when will I have to deal with a specs file? Spec files for GCC are still sort of a mystery to me, so I am wondering if some background here will help me.

 3. In general, beyond specifying a cross compiler in my qmake.conf, what else might I need to consider?

I have reached the end of my rope with CMake; it has so much potential, but I cannot seem to make it find the basic system tools (i.e. `make`) in order to function.

SYMPTOMS
--------

CMake and the CMake GUI produce the following (after deleting the CMakeCache.txt file):

    CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM is not set.  You probably need to select a different build tool.

I am focusing on finding `make` in this question, however, I&#39;ve also had many of the same issues with CMake failing to find libraries and other utility files (linker, nm, ar, etc.). The techniques I list below seem to enable CMake to find these files when running under Linux.

SYSTEM

Windows 7 (64-bit); multiple versions of MinGW (32-bit/64-bit); Cmake 2.8.4;
NONSTANDARD install location for MinGW (c:/MinGW-32 ).

THINGS I HAVE TRIED
-------------------

1. CMakelists.txt contains `SET( CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM c:/MinGW-32/bin/make.exe FORCE )` within the first 10 lines of the file.

2. Previous versions of CMakelists.txt contained:

        find_program(CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM
          NAMES make
                make.exe
          DOC &quot;Find a suitable make program for building under Windows/MinGW&quot;
          HINTS c:/MinGW-32/bin )  
3. Set `CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM` in a cmd.exe environment variable prior to running either CMake or CMake-GUI.

4. Use of a &quot;toolchain&quot; file which identifies `CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM` as well as `CMAKE_C_COMPILER`, etc.

ONE THING THAT HAS WORKED

CMake will successfully create build files IF I use the GUI to populate the `CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM` variable (&quot;C:/MinGW-32/bin/make.exe&quot;).

CMAKE_MAKE_PROGRAM not found

I have a piece of code that looks like the following. Let&#39;s say it&#39;s in a file named `example.cpp`

On a windows, if I type in the `cmd` the command `g++ example.cpp`, it will fail. It&#39;s a long list of errors I think mostly due to the linker complaining about not being able to convert from `string` to `const char*`.

But if I run the compiler using an additional argument like so: `g++ -std=c++17 example.cpp`, it will compile and work fine with no problems.

What happens when I run the former command? I&#39;m guessing a default &lt;s&gt;version&lt;/s&gt; standard of the C++ compiler gets called, but I don&#39;t know which? And as a programmer/developer, should I always use the latter command with the extra argument?

I am currently trying to get CMake to run on my Windows 7 (64-bit) system. I want to compile [TagLib][1] for later use with a Qt application I am working on. I would like to compile it with MinGW (not Visual C++ as in [this other question][2]).

I download the installer (cmake-2.8.3-win32-x86.exe) and install it (I also opt to add CMake to my path). I then go to the directory why the CMakeLists.txt file is and run `cmake .`. It then gives me this giant error.

I was kind of surprised that it failed so hard out of the box, considering it advertises itself as a cross-platform make.

I tried setting INCLUDE, LIB, and LIBPATH (Windows environment variables) all to my MinGW binaries directory (C:\MinGW\bin) but it&#39;s still giving me the same error. I also tried setting CMAKE_C_COMPILER and CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER to the location of g++ (C:\MinGW\bin\g++).

Does anyone know what&#39;s going on here?

**SOLUTION:**

Per tibur&#39;s suggestion, I ran the cmake GUI to create the make files.
I then went into the directory taglib directory and ran `mingw32-make.exe` to do the actual build.

Running CMake on Windows

I&#39;m used to manually install GCC from source before on Ubuntu and it was a painful process. So I really don&#39;t want to do repeat this process. Currently, I have MinGW and GCC (4.6.2) installed on my machine. So is there an easy way to update GCC without building it entirely from source? Has anyone done it before can share me some tips?



How to update GCC in MinGW on Windows?

When compiling with MinGW, I have to copy over certain dll files from the MinGW bin directory before the exe will run (Even when using &quot;-static&quot; and/or &quot;-static-libstdc++&quot;.)
How do I change that? Is there a special build of MinGW that I have to use? Ultimately I want to be able to run the program with nothing but the exe in the directory (and no windows environment variables set.) These File&#39;s are:

 - libstdc++-6.dll
 - libgcc_s_seh-1.dll
 - libwinpthread-1.dll

And here is the complete list of step&#39;s I fallow:

 1.  Open Up Code::Blocks
 2.  Select &quot;File-&gt;New-&gt;Project-&gt;Console&quot;
 3.  Fill out the project settings for project &quot;Hello World&quot;
 4.  Right click Project-&gt;Build Options...-&gt;Hello World (Root target)-&gt;Other Options

MinGW .exe requires a few gcc dll&#39;s regardless of the code?

I configured MinGW and distutils so now I can compile extensions using this command:

    setup.py install

MinGW&#39;s gcc compiler will be used and package will be installed. For that I installed MinGW and [created distutils.cfg](https://docs.python.org/2/install/#location-and-names-of-config-files) file with following content:

I want to make a simple, simple DLL which exports one or two functions, then try to call it from another program... Everywhere I&#39;ve looked so far, is for complicated matters, different ways of linking things together, weird problems that I haven&#39;t even &lt;i&gt;begun&lt;/i&gt; to realize exist yet... I just want to get started, by doing something like so:

Make a DLL which exports some functions, like,

I&#39;m compiling with MinGW, I&#39;d like to do this in C, but if there&#39;s any real differences doing it in C++, I&#39;d like to know those also. I want to know how to load that DLL into another C (and C++) program, and then call those functions from it.
My goal here, after playing around with DLLs for a bit, is to make a VB front-end for C(++) code, by loading DLLs into visual basic (I have visual studio 6, I just want to make some forms and events for the objects on those forms, which call the DLL).

I need to know how to call gcc (/g++) to make it create a DLL, but also how to write (/generate) an exports file... and what I can/cannot do in a DLL (like, can I take arguments by pointer/reference from the VB front-end? Can the DLL call a theoretical function in the front-end? Or have a function take a &quot;function pointer&quot; (I don&#39;t even know if that&#39;s possible) from VB and call it?) I&#39;m fairly certain I can&#39;t pass a variant to the DLL...but that&#39;s all I know really.

Okay, I figured out how to compile it with gcc, to make the dll I ran

    gcc -c -DBUILD_DLL dll.c
    gcc -shared -o mydll.dll dll.o -Wl,--out-implib,libmessage.a

and then I had another program load it and test the functions, and it worked great,

but I tried loading it with VB6, like this

then I just called add2(text1.text) from a form, but it gave me a runtime error:

To solve the previous problem, I just had to compile it like so:

    gcc -c -DBUILD_DLL dll.c
    gcc -shared -o mydll.dll dll.o -Wl,--add-stdcall-alias

and use this API call in VB6

    Public Declare Function add2 Lib &quot;C:\c\dll\mydll&quot; _
        (ByVal num As Integer) As Integer

I learned not to forget to specify ByVal or ByRef explicitly--I was just getting back the address of the argument I passed, it looked like, -3048.

Compile a DLL in C/C++, then call it from another program

I have been working on a project (a game to be specific) and I feel that I should start over with different libraries. So when doing this I reinstalled [Code::Blocks](http://codeblocks.org) and setup my new libraries and includes. 

But as of now Im having a problem starting u[ my new project to test if all of the includes work. This problem is: `libstdc++-6.dll was not found.` At first i wondered if I could just find this file online, but its nowhere to be found(or at least the many places I have searched...) Soon after, I tried loading up my old project, and the same problem happened again(wierd... ._.) I was thinking its maybe my compiler, so I used my older compiler and it did the same thing! At this moment I held the problem off for tomorrow(which is today)

So my question is: If anyone else had this problem, how would you solve it?

Im using Code::Blocks with MinGW as the compiler on Windows Vista 32 bit.

Here are the Build options in my project. Note that these are the settings in the Project, not the global compiler:

In linker-&gt;link libraries i have various links to files with a `.a` extension, these files include Bullet PHysics, Ogre3D, and SFML

In the search directories i have links to the MinGW/bin, and the MinGW/lib directories, along with other links to different libraries.


My Compiler is MinGW, a GNU GCC compiler for windows 32 bit. and the IDE is Codeblocks. Also note that in Debug and Release settings on the project, there is nothing.

Most of these setings are also pieces that i got from the [Ogre3D Application setup tutorial](http://www.ogre3d.org/tikiwiki/Setting+Up+An+Application+-+CodeBlocks) if that is of any help.



libstdc++-6.dll not found

I&#39;ve tried implementing a function like this, but unfortunately it doesn&#39;t work:

The details of this question are taken from a problem faced when trying to use ffmpeg libraries with msvc, however what I&#39;m really interested in is an explanation of what is &quot;stack alignment&quot;.

The Details:

 - When runnig my msvc complied program which links to avcodec I get the
   following error: &quot;Compiler did not align stack variables. Libavcodec has
   been miscompiled&quot;, followed by a crash in avcodec.dll. 
 - avcodec.dll was not compiled with msvc, so I&#39;m unable to see what is going on inside.
 - When running ffmpeg.exe and using the same avcodec.dll everything works well. 
 - ffmpeg.exe was not compiled with msvc, it was complied with gcc / mingw (same as avcodec.dll)

And I&#39;ve sucessfully managed to link statically `libstdc++-6.dll` and `libgcc_s_sjlj-1.dll` by using `-static-libgcc -static-libstdc++` parameters, but I cannot find a command for doing the same with `libwinpthread-1.dll`.
